Summary: Shiny, 2008
Shiny is a Young Adult speculative fiction ezine founded by Alisa Krasnostein, Tansy Rayner-Roberts and Ben Payne, out of Australia. (With #4, the second of 2008, Krasnostein is co-editing with Tehani Wessely.) I think a YA short fiction outlet is a great idea. Two issues, #3 and #4, appeared in 2008, each with 3 short stories, so a total of 6 short stories, about 30,000 words. From #3 I quite enjoyed all three stories, perhaps most particularly Katherine Sparrow's "The Future is Already Seen", about a girl with a slightly odd sense of time and her set of school friends. From #4 I liked Bren MacDibble's "Being Bella Wang", about various clones of a harsh and ambitious woman struggling to find their own identity.
Five of the six stories were by women, and three of the stories were SF.
